Tourist board welcomes Fly Europa´s flight plans

Flight capacity to Gibraltar is set to increase this summer when a third airline begins serving the Rock from the UK. Charter carrier Fly Europa is expected to launch scheduled services from Manchester and Stansted in April using Boeing 737s. A spokesman for the Sussex-based airline said it hoped to unveil full details soon. Fly Europa has been seeking permission for the routes for more than a year. It now hopes to gain approval following the withdrawal of objections by British Airways franchise carrier GB Airways, which serves the Rock from Heathrow and Gatwick. Monarch Airlines also offers scheduled flights from Luton. Fly Europa´s plans have been welcomed by the Gibraltar Tourist Board, which has been pressing for more flight capacity. The routes will allow the board to extend UK promotions beyond its core market in the south of England. Gibraltar Tourist Board UK director Albert Poggio said; "It is exciting because it offers direct access from more parts of the country. We do not expect the new routes to dilute existing traffic. We expect them to introduce new people to Gibraltar." In April, GB Airways will boost capacity when it withdraws its five weekly flights from Heathrow but steps up Gatwick frequency to twice daily. The airline hopes to use Airbuses on some flights for the first time.
